World powers vow to fight causes of terrorism

Accepting unanimously that terrorism continues to pose serious threat to international peace and security, world powers have vowed to fight the root causes behind it. Addressing a special meeting of Security Council in United Nations headquarters on Monday, high representatives of the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, China, Japan et al reaffirmed to muster their efforts against terrorism.

Outwittingly condemning all the forms of terrorism, they called on the international community for the holistic approach to spear down the sinister vortex of terrorist acts. They expressed the urgency to redouble the efforts to root out cultural and social injustice, hatred, poverty, frustration and absence of development, that are supposedly deemed as the reasons behind the terrorism.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said ” We need to be smart…we should continue to work together to fight against the root causes of terrorism in order to reduce its threat “. UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs William Hague stressed to buckle down the efforts to ensure the assistance to the countries not go to the hands of terrorists. ” There must be better coordination among the international bodies to ensure the funds and assistance not exploited by the terrorists”, Hague added. He also warned of worst situation and increased possibility of terrorist attacks if the hostage crisis continued for the exchange of large ransom.

Brazilian External Affairs Minister Celso Amorim urged for the essentiality of special care to thwart the efforts of terrorists to acquire nuclear weapons. Li Baodang, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations asked for the central role of UN in counter-terrorism holistic efforts. “Counterterrorism efforts should fully comply with UN charter and it should keep in consideration the sovereignty and integrity of a nation,” he stressed.

France, suffering from the latest hostage crisis, called on the international community to stand shoulder to shoulder in order to fight the terrorism and guard against the reasons behind it. Russia expressed the need of tackling the growing use of cyber space for the terrorist purposes.

Prior to this, UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon addressing the Security Council meeting, called on the international community to increase the efforts regarding counterterrorism. Ban said “Terrorism may be a gathering storm, but the international response is gathering steam”. He mentioned that countering terrorism demands a broad approach including measures to deprive terrorists of financial resources and mobility and prevent from acquiring weapons of mass destruction, paying more attention to education, development as well as intercultural dialogue. He also called on to strengthen legal regime building in international counter terrorism instruments, respect of human en rights and capacity building of the impoverished countries.
